ABOUT US

Founded in 2012, Independence Place provides a social and recreational outlet for adults with intellectual disabilities. First Baptist Church Trussville has generously provided Independence Place with rooms and amenities to operate its program. While not directly affiliated with the church, Independence Place appreciates its support. The program's main objective is to acquire its own facility to serve more individuals. Activities offered are enjoyable but primarily aimed at improving participants' social and cognitive skills, enhancing their independence and quality of life.

There is a pressing need for a program in eastern Birmingham to address the social and recreational requirements of adults with exceptional needs. During high school, they benefited from a supportive social environment, but post-graduation, they encounter challenges in navigating social interactions and forging connections. Without structured activities, they face difficulties in remaining socially engaged and actively participating in their community.
